Description

The riderless horse or empty saddle ceremony honors the dead. Chief Joseph’s brother, Ollokot, died in the last battle in the Bear Paw Mountains. Chief Joseph surrendered there and spoke the words, “Hear me, my chiefs: My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”
Although this depiction didn’t happen in history, I wanted to honor Chief Joseph and his brother by showing the spirit of this famous leader leading a riderless horse across the battlefield.
